The Power of Small Wins

In Greg McKeown’s book, Essentialism, Chapter 17, The Power of Small Wins, you’ll read an example of people being given tickets by police as punishment, and how “strengthening” defence against crime typically involves creating harsher punishments, which overall actually worsens crime.

Instead, one police department decided to give “reward” tickets for positive behaviours, the opposite of crimes, and guess what happened? Over time, crime rates dropped from 60% down to 8%. Yes, single digit 8 percent.

Imagine doing this with your thoughts about other people, and in your interactions and conversations with them. When you reward people (acknowledge them) for their positive behaviour that you appreciate, it encourages them to do more of it, and it also encourages you to appreciate more of them, feeding back and compounding into a beneficial and productive cycle of helpfulness.

When you think about someone, see someone, or talk to someone, and you begin to focus on their positive aspects that you appreciate or would appreciate more, how much do you reach out to them and let them know that, because even if their response isn’t positive initially, you might be surprised at the positive, long-term, compounding effect it has on both of you, moving forward.
